ABOUT

Bon-Dance/Bon-Odori

“Bon-dance”  is a style of dancing performed during Obon. It is a form of folk entertainment.

Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead, the style of celebration varies greatly from region to region. Each region has a local dance, as well as different music. The music can be songs specifically pertinent to the spiritual message of Obon, or local min’yō folk songs.

In most areas, the Obon season falls on August 13 or 16, but in Shuzenji, the Obon season is celebrated a little earlier, usually for three days starting on August 1.

Shuzenji Onsen

Shuzenji is one of the oldest and most famous hot spring resorts on the Izu Peninsula, and there are still historic ryokan where guests such as Soseki Natsume and Osamu Dazai stayed.

Shuzenji Onsen was named after Shuzenji Temple at the town center. Kobo Daishi, one of Japan’s most important religious figures, founded the temple about 1200 years ago.
