Bon-Dance/Bon-Odori
“Bon-dance” is a style of dancing performed during Obon. It is a kind of folk entertainment.
Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of the dead, the style of celebration varies in many aspects from region to region. Each region has a local dance, as well as different music. The music can be songs specifically pertinent to the spiritual message of Obon, or local min’yō folk songs.
In most areas, the Obon season falls on August 13 or 16, but in Shuzenji, the Obon season is celebrated a little earlier, usually for three days starting on August 1.
Shuzenji Onsen
Shuzenji is one of the oldest and most famous hot spring resorts on the Izu Peninsula, and there are still historic ryokan in existence where guests such as Soseki Natsume and Osamu Dazai stayed.
Shuzenji Onsen was named after Shuzenji Temple at the town center. Kobo Daishi, one of Japan’s most important religious persons, founded the temple about 1200 years ago.
[Tourists Welcome!] There are two practice days to help you remember the dances you may have forgotten and to dance with all your might on the day of the Bon Odori. Practice in a cool, air-conditioned room:)
Starting with the construction of the yagura tower by the Shuzenji temple craftsmen around 8 AM, the setup for the night stalls begins at 3:30 PM.
[General Viewing Welcome] This is a traditional Buddhist memorial service where offerings are made to the souls suffering from hunger and to the unconnected deceased, as well as to the ancestors of temple parishioners and many other departed souls. Please remain quiet during the viewing.
We'll gather around the yagura and dance various bon odori together in circles. The dances are simple and have many loops, so anyone can easily master them! Let's dance together and enjoy a fun summer night.
Please enjoy a night stroll through the Shuzenji Onsen area. We recommend the Bamboo Forest Path, which is illuminated with works by a paper-cutting artist from Shuzenji. You can also enjoy the footbath within the onsen area until 11 PM.
